What Does it Mean To Be The Default Parent

What Does it Mean to be The Default Parent?

In any household, there is always the default parent! This person tends to every need and whim of everyone!

In my house, it’s me! Now don’t get me wrong there are pros to this title. You are the person who makes it safe, feeds hungry tummies (including the dog), and provides the best cuddles when the kids are unwell, the list is endless.

But it is totally exhausting! Not only are you the main caregiver but it seems like the chores land on your lap as well.

You Are THEIR Person

There are reasons why our babies feel comfortable turning into devils when we are around or showing their super sensitive sides. If you are at your wits end wondering why your baby says mama when crying then take note of the reasons below, I think you may find them comforting.

  • Nurture- The mothering instinct to care and nurture begins when you get your BFP. You nurture your baby from the day its tiny cells start to develop and your little one knows this if they are upset or want something then momma’s the gal to sort it.
  • Safe Place- For 9 months they were safely tucked inside you, your heartbeat, scent, and voice is home to your baby. When they are in their safe place they can act or feel in any way without feeling lost knowing you are around.
  • Respond Quicker- I don’t know about you but when my baby cries I can get up and settle them quicker than my husband can take off his coat! If your baby realizes I get what I want quicker from mama then that is who I will call.
  • Feeding- Whether you choose to breastfeed or not your baby understands that you have the goods. You are the one that gives them the satisfaction of a full tummy. So if hunger strikes you can guarantee you are the one they call on.
  • Natural Instinct- As a mom, I know what my baby needs just by the tone of her cry. I’m not sure whether this is natural instinct or some form of witchery but it seems that your little one will pick up on the fact mom knows what they want and when. I don’t want to take the shine off dad’s but it’s usually mom who springs to her feet at the sign of that first whimper.
  • Separation anxiety- This is an unnerving phase that many children go through. During many milestones in your baby’s first year, you will notice times when you won’t be able to breathe without your bub knowing about it. Their fear of being without you is terrifying for them and hence their cries for your attention and presence may be more prominent.

What to Do When Baby Says Mama When They’re Crying

  • Reassurance is key – if you are going to another room, tell your child that it is going to happen, you could keep talking to them for reassurance but doing this often will help them realize that mommy does come back.
  • Allow dad to take the reins – ok so this may take a bit of practice but allowing dad to bottle feed or take on a primary care role can help ease the burden on you. It’s easy to forget that it took you both to make this beautiful human and it takes two to care for her.
  • Give yourself a break – I don’t want to hear about mom guilt because I have enough for everyone! Remember that even though your role as a mom is your first priority you have to take time for yourself!
