Low Hard Cervix at 4 Weeks Pregnant – What’s Normal
Your cervix usually becomes soft and high in early pregnancy but having a low hard cervix at 4 weeks pregnant doesn’t mean that there is something wrong. It can often take our bodies a little time to catch up and remember that every woman’s body reacts differently to pregnancy. Your cervix is also not the best indication of conceiving or not. The best advice would be to do a test or get yourself to the doctor if you are concerned at all.
Changes in your cervix during pregnancy
Your cervix will be at its highest position when in the early stages of pregnancy. When menstruating it will be soft and feel swollen. You can thank the high amounts of estrogen in your body for that!
Many moms check the position of their own cervix to ensure it’s in the right position. You too could do this but if your cervix is low and hard at 4 weeks pregnant then it can cause unnecessary worry and stress.
The best way to check for pregnancy would be to take an at-home test or visit the doctor. Our bodies are amazing. They grow little people but sometimes they are not as reliable when it comes to showing us we are pregnant.
What is a Cervix?
I don’t want to take for granted that you would know what or where your cervix is. Many of us have never really thought about it until now, I bet.
Your cervix is a narrow tubular shape. It is situated at the lowest point of your vagina. Known as the opening of the vagina it can change throughout the month to maintain a pregnancy and also expel blood through menstruation.
When conceiving your cervix is soft and will be open slightly. This is to allow sperm into the vagina to fertilize an egg. When you are not pregnant or fertile your cervix will be low and hard.
When pregnant your cervix usually goes to its highest point and is soft. This is why some women worry when they are 4 weeks pregnant with a low cervix.
Its main role during pregnancy is to hold your mucus plug in place. The American Pregnancy Association discusses cervical mucus in greater detail but if you are planning to get pregnant then you can use the mucus your cervix creates to enhance the chances of fertilization. Obviously, this is alongside monitoring ovulation and keeping up to date on your fertile window.
Once you are recognized as being pregnant your cervix creates a mucus plug barrier to prevent infection. Many pregnant women can lose their mucus plug through pregnancy, but it doesn’t mean that your labor has started as your cervix will produce more to prevent infection. It will stay in this position until it is time to dilate usually in your third trimester.
All your dreams about being a mother are finally coming true. You are about to be blessed with a beautiful child. At this moment, it is normal for you to worry about your diet. You must be nervous thinking, ” Can I eat flan while pregnant?”
The answer is yes, you can eat Flan while you are pregnant. But wait, don’t start eating this already- you gotta know a few things before you do!
Is It Reliable As A Way of Confirming Pregnancy?
As previously mentioned everyone’s body is different, in order to understand your body you need to become familiar with where your cervix lies when it is not ovulating.
If you find it is spongy and high then you could well be in early pregnancy.
How Do I Check My Cervix?
There is a way you can check your cervix at home. Follow the steps below so you have an idea of what to look out for:
- Firstly you need to make sure your hands are clean and your nails are short. This helps prevent infection.
- Doing it after a shower is always a good idea as your body is more relaxed.
- Using your longest finger, insert it into your vagina and feel for your cervix.
- Depending on your cycle you will find either your cervix is soft and high or low and hard.
- If it is soft and high this can indicate ovulation.
- Doing this over the course of a month can help you determine when the best time would be to try and conceive.
- Your cervix will feel like a doughnut-shaped sponge.
- If you suspect that you are pregnant then your cervix will be at its highest point and very soft.
Doing this over a course of months can help you understand where your cervix lies during different times of the month. Assess this by the amount you need to insert your finger.
When Not To Check Your Cervix
It is important to recognize times when you shouldn’t check your cervix.
These being…
- If you have a UTI or infection.
- After having sex
- If you are pregnant and your water has gone
These three things can change your cervix and in checking its position you could spread or worsen the infection.
Can The Position of My Cervix Be Misleading in Early Pregnancy?
Of Course, the best way to identify a pregnancy is with a home testing kit. Many women have monitored their cervix and find that this can be another way of determining whether they have successfully started on your journey to parenthood.
This goes without saying that of course our bodies are magical machines but sometimes they can be misleading.
If you have had a positive test and missed a period it is important not to lose hope if you have found your cervix is still low and hard. It is dependent on your body as to when your cervix retracts to the point it would during pregnancy.
Cervical changes are different in everyone which is why this way of testing shouldn’t be the sole way of confirming a pregnancy.
