It can make you panic if you feel some wet, damp fluid and are unsure what it is. However, use the following steps to identify if it’s amniotic fluid or semen before rushing to your gynaecologist.
1. Once you feel like a gush, trickle, or unusual wetness, put on a pad/panty liner to trap the liquid. Note the time and allow it to stay for 30-60minutes.
2. After the specified time, you’ll have the fluid. If it’s colourless, odourless, or with a sweet smell, then your water could be breaking. A white liquid smelling like chlorine or ammonia means you are wet due to semen, especially if you had unprotected sex recently.
3. You may also feel the texture to tell the difference. If you’re concerned it may be amniotic fluid, visit your healthcare provider immediately.
